The village of Monkton Combe lies 2.25 miles south of Bath in a narrow wooded valley classified as an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'. It had been home to the monks of Bath Abbey from 1000 AD to 1500 AD and the Mill which stands beside The Manor House was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. The Manor House itself is probably one of the longest continuously inhabited houses in England - since 1262. Today it offers accommodation and fine dining in its restaurant to visitors to this gentle green natural valley. 300 years ago a school was started which continues to thrive today. At the same time stone cottages, a pub, an tiny ancient prison and a few grand houses were added. Today it thrives as the nearest village to the City Centre on the southern side, despite being so easily accesible Monkto Combe still retains the atmosphere of a little village a million miles away from the hubbub of modern life.

We took our kids there last year for a short break, quite nice with the donkey rides on the beach and the sea world. Seemed to be a good night life for the teenagers and older too.

Lovely village in the cotswold area, has origins dating back to the Saxon period with St Mary's church originally built in the 1300's
