East Grinstead is an ancient market town, surrounded by some of the finest countryside in the South East of England. East Grinstead is the gateway to the Ashdown Forest, Winnie the Pooh country, the Bluebell Railway, Standen and Sackville College (where the Christmas Carol, Good King Wenceslas, was written). |

Christmas at Sompting school was one of the best times of my childhood memories. We all took some biscuits or cake and sandwiches, jelly and orange juice were provided by Mrs Holegate. We then went over to the reading room to mime to records or dance. Mr Fleming was our headmaster and made it all very exciting. We decorated our class rooms with the foil left after milk botttle tops had been punched out of it, better than any you can buy today. I read on the planning propasals that they want to extend the school and i am sad that things have to change, I have very very fond memories of the school. |

sompting is the place i was born and i was actually born in number 11 orchard cottages west street. the cottages are no longer there but i can remember sleeping in the attic of number 9. my nan and grandad chatfield were the last to move from orchard cottages before they were demolished. mr fleming the then headmaster of sompting school allowed us to watch from the rec as demolition took place. |
